Advanced Placement (AP) Information

 

Norcross HS proudly offers an Army JROTC unit. Students enrolled in the Army JROTC often aspire to the military. Every student interested in the military has to take the ASVAB. The ASVAB is designed to help the various military branches determine individual strengths, to find where candidates fit best and are most likely to succeed.

The test measures knowledge in eight areas:

• General Science - Life, earth, space and physical sciences
• Arithmetic Reasoning - Ability to solve basic math and word problems
• Word Knowledge - Ability to grasp the meaning of words through synonyms
• Paragraph Comprehension - Ability to understand written material
• Mathematics - Math concepts and applications
• Electronics - Electrical current, circuits, devices and electronic systems
• Auto and Shop - Car maintenance and repair, and wood and metal shop
• Mechanical - Principles of mechanical devices, structural support, properties of materials

Students may have the opportunity to take the ASVAB at Norcross High School or at one of over 14,000 Military Entrance Testing Stations (METS), or at a Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) in your area. Check with the  Counseling Office or your local recruiter to find METS and MEPS locations near you.

Since your test scores can have an impact on your Military Occupational Specialty (MOS)—and whether or not you can attend certain special schools (like Airborne school, Sniper school and many others)—we recommend you make the most of these additional resources.

The Georgia Milestones is a comprehensive summative assessment program that measures how well students have learned the knowledge and skills outlined in the content standards. It is designed to provide information about student achievement and readiness to move on to the next level of learning. While the tests measure each individual student’s mastery of the curriculum during the school year, they also help teachers and schools better understand the impact COVID-19 has had on learning and identify what resources and support our students will need in the coming school year.

High Schools administer the Georgia Milestones End of Course Assessments (EOCs) to students in designated courses to measure achievement in English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. Courses with an End of Course assessment are Algebra I, Biology, American Literature and Composition (11th Grade), and U.S. History. Testing will be administered over multiple days, depending on the course. The testing window is determined by the Georgia DOE and the County Office. Your student’s teachers will communicate specific dates for testing in your student’s courses.

District Assessments are a part of Gwinnett County Public School’s Balanced Assessment Program. They are a mixture of both formative and summative assessments administered at the classroom level to measure student learning of the Academic, Knowledge, and Skills (AKS). The Pretest, Interim, and Final assessments allow students to demonstrate what they know, understand, and are able to do.

Administration of the assessments occurs once every 9-weeks and requires a maximum of one class period to complete.

The data from the assessments provide teachers, students, parents, and other stakeholders information regarding student learning. Students are encouraged to review their assessment results and teacher feedback to help improve their learning. Teachers use the data, individually and collaboratively, to help make informed decisions during planning and refining of instructional activities. District leaders use the data to provide instructional support to improve student achievement.

WHAT: The PSAT/NMSQT serves as an excellent preparation tool for students who will be taking the SAT. For 11th graders, it is the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT).

WHO: 9th - 11th grade students will participate at no cost (some English Language Learners who are early in their English language learning and some self-contained special education students will not participate)

WHEN: Tuesday, October 29, 2024 

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS WITH ACCOMODATIONS

Requests for PSAT testing accommodations are due to College Board on September 6, 2024. If your student qualifies for testing accommodations and you would like to request them, please fill out this form:

If a student with disabilities took the PSAT last year (in grades 9, 10, or 11) and had accommodations, their accommodations with the College Board will still be in place until they graduate. For these students, nothing additional is needed.

Students who are NEW to NHS (with an IEP or 504) and will be taking the PSAT had a hard copy of the form linked above delivered to them in late August.
